Game server hosting vs VPS is a question about who does the work, not about which is faster. One gives you a running game and a web panel. The other gives you an empty Linux machine and root access, which is the administrator login that lets you install anything and break anything. What game server hosting actually is#

A game server plan is one game, already installed, wrapped in a panel you reach from your billing login. There is no operating system for you to patch and no install script to run. Servers come online in about three minutes, and the game panel gives you a live console, a file browser for configs and mods, a Startup tab for switching game versions or Java runtimes (Java 8, 11, 17, and 21 are all available images), and backups and cron-style scheduled restarts.

Two details matter more to buyers than the feature list. You can hand a moderator their own panel login with only the permissions you tick, so nobody ever needs your billing password. And plans are sold by resources rather than by player slots, so another friend joining does not cost you anything.

What a VPS gives you instead#

A VPS is a virtual private server: your own slice of a physical machine, with root and a bare operating system. You install the game, you keep it patched, and you decide what else lives on the box. That last part is the real argument for it. One VPS can run a game server, a Discord bot, a live web map, a mod database, and a voice server, all on one invoice.

How much server your game actually needs#

Notice how far apart the ends are. A Terraria world and a Palworld save are not the same purchase, and a VPS sized for the first will fall over under the second. When the VPS is the better buy#

  • More than one thing. Several game servers, or one game plus the bot, map, and site around it, on a single machine you control.
  • System-level requirements. A plugin that wants its own database, a custom runtime, or a sidecar process is easier with Docker on your own box than inside a panel.
  • A game we do not offer a panel plan for. Root access covers everything.
  • You already run Linux. If SSH is where you are comfortable, the panel is a layer between you and the work.

FAQ#

Is a VPS cheaper than game server hosting?
For one modest server, usually not, once you count the hours you spend administering it. A VPS wins on cost when you consolidate: three or four servers packed onto one machine beats three or four panel plans. Compare the live prices on the game server pages and the VPS page for your own numbers.

Can I run a Minecraft server on a VPS?

Do I get root access on a game server plan?
No. You get the game's files through the panel's file manager and SFTP, plus the console and startup variables. The operating system underneath is ours to maintain. If you need root, you want a VPS.

Can I move from a game server plan to a VPS later?
Yes. Download a backup from the panel's Backups tab, upload the world to your new server, and cancel the old plan. Worlds are portable; the panel is the part you leave behind.
